PORT KLANG: Malaysia’s very own port here – the 12th largest container port in the world – is set to improve its ranking following strong double-digit percentage point growth this year, says Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai (pic).

He said Port Klang had achieved 11.3% growth with 9.8 million in twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) as of the third quarter of 2016.

”The double-digit growth rate in TEUs is very encouraging.

”With this positive momentum, we are hopeful that Port Klang, which is ranked 12th in the world’s busiest ports, will climb to the 11th place soon,” he told the press after launching the Westport Bunkering Services (WEBS) Facility by WEBS Oil Hub Sdn Bhd here Tuesday.

Liow also said that no approval had been given to foreign facilities to provide bunkering services – supplying ship fuel – in Malaysian waters.

”We have the local facilities to provide bunkering services to vessels plying the Straits of Malacca and the services are available in Port Klang. We do not need a foreign facility to do that.

”The Ministry will strengthen surveillance and enforcement to ensure that foreigners’ presence will not be there in this industry,” he said. – The Star
